Focus 2019 Gear stick sloppy

Featured Replies

Hi can anyone confirm how much gear stick forward & back play there should be on a 2019 focus 1.0.  Left/Right is perfect with little to nothing but forward & back I have about 50mm of looseness, in or out of gear.  When moving the 'sloppy area'  only the cables don't move, all seams to be at the gear stick mount end, I pulled it apart & there is a silver spring/wire for left/right ..should there be something similar for forward & back.

On another note whats the best way to sort videos for uploading here, I have an MP4 of this issue but cant get it small enough or in an acceptable file type to use.

Hopefully, when the video can be seen, you will get some more replies!

A sloppy gearstick unfortunately is a product characteristic of the 6-Speed MX65 transmission.

This can be improved a bit by replacing the plastic linkages/bushings but the sloppy feeling will remain and gradually become worse again.

Part of the sloppy feeling is intentional to prevent excessive feedback from the transmission to the gearstick. Without a certain amount of free play the gearstick will be moving constantly because of engine/gearbox vibrations. I suspect that the lack of a dual mass flywheel is one of the causes.

Compared to the 6-Speed B6/B6+ and MMT6 transmissions the 6-Speed MX65 transmission feels a lot less precise/accurate. When I test drove a 1.0 ECOboost Focus MK4 the sloppy feeling of the gearstick actually remembered me of the 1986 Ford Sierra 2.3 Diesel my grandfather used to drive.

Hi thanks for that, would it be the green blocks shown below to replace?  I can see the selector bracket on top of the gear box moves with the slack & would make sense that the pivot ball is moving too much in the green plastic block (the slack is there before the orange part moves)

Yes, those plastic parts are causing the problem.

Hi if anyone interested got the plastic blocks changed today, made a big difference, now has about 10mm or less of slack forward to back, so well happy for a £6.50 part.
