2012 Focus suddenly in "limp mode"

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I hope this is the right place and hope you can help!

I've got 2 Focuses - a 2018 ST3 and a 2012 Ecoboost I am basically using as a run around to keep the mileage off the ST (not to mention the costs in my wallet :D)

I got it last year with approx 102K miles on the clock - good service, one owner, FSH and long MOT (October this year)

Today, I was pulling out of my gym car park and suddenly had an engine malfunction warning pop up on the HUD, followed by the engine losing power, and entering limp mode - it was crawling back home quite literally

Parked up at home and took a look under the hood, the engine is rattling away and is moving pretty drastically - almost like it wants to jump out of the engine bay

I've read up and it sounds like it could be many things, but wondered if anyone has had a similar experience, and if so what was the culprit? Would ask about costs but until I know what is causing the issue its kind of a moot point.

Its a junk car, i'm running into the ground so not the end of the world if the engine has carked it, more of an inconvenience than anything!

Cheers guys

If it's a 1.0 EcoBoost the wetbelts are probably failing and knocking the timing out.  You'll have to have the codes read with Ford specific diags such as Forscan to confirm.
