Oil on spark plugs - Cause for concern? '17 1.5 ecoboost

Featured Replies

Hi all,
I just changed my spark plugs on my 2017 Focus 1.5 ecoboost (M8DD) at 67k miles.

There is oil on the threads of the plugs from cylinders 1 & 2. Plugs from 3 & 4 are dry.

I have searched the web for the answer but half of the results say that it is absolutely normal, and the other half say that it is caused by a leaking valve gasket.

Please can anyone with experience with this engine tell me if I have an issue or not?

Thanks!

I'm assuming there cycling 1234 in left to right order, if so, I'd be suspicious of cylinder 2 as thats the only plug with black ceramic, the others look healthy from the ceramic colour.

From the look of them they just look like they've been in way way too long, especially number 4

Thanks both,

That can probably be put down to running a map on it previous which clearly wasn't right (superchips bluefin) - it caused it to fail an MOT on emissions and stank after driving it hard. I took it off and replaced with the standard map and it got through the re-test fine.

Probably a blessing in disguise as I since learned of this engine being prone to crack the block, especially on the 182hp version over the 150hp which I have.

I'll leave it as is then and check the new plugs in a few thousand miles just to be sure.

Thanks!
