Think my clutch has gone

Featured Replies

Was driving today and I heard this slight tinkering noise as I was traveling down the road then all of a sudden the clutch pedal had no tension at all. It just moves back and forwards with no tension. Can change gear when the engines off.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Possibly broken pedal return spring?

Yeah possibly. If the clutch had gone wouldn't the pedal be stuck in the up position ?

Common issue. One of several earlier threads:

Managed to have a proper look at it. The clutch pedal does work as normal but when the clutch is pressed in I'm unable to select a gear. I'm guessing the clutch is well and truly knackered

Most common problem I've encountered is hydraulics - slave or master cylinder. Does "pumping" the pedal make any difference?

At first when I pumped the clutch pedal there was a bit of resistance but still couldn't select a gear. But after about a minute of pumping the clutch the resistance went

First check the brake fluid level (the clutch master cylinder is supplied from this reservoir). If the level is low, top it up to the correct level, and try pumping the pedal a few times again.

Check there is no fluid leaking from the bottom of the bell housing (between engine & gearbox). If there is a leak from this area, then the slave cylinder is likely to be gone. Depending on what type of cylinder is fitted, this could be relatively cheap (if your car has an external slave cylinder), or expensive (if you have an internal cylinder, gearbox has to come out). (I'm not familiar with which type is fitted on a Focus of that age).

Thanks for that. Forgot to say it's a 08 plate MK2.5

Unfortunately it is. If that is the fault, the gearbox has to come off anyway, so whole clutch replacement is the sensible option - leaking fluid could have contaminated the friction material in any case.

Thanks for the information guys it's really appreciated.
