Newbie question about engine oil

Featured Replies

I'm about to do my first engine oil replacement.

The specs for the oil for my Focus 2004/2005 MK1.5 1.6LX states WSS-M2C913-B which is a 5W/30 mix.

Can you use any 5W/30 or do you think it's important to pay extra and get a specific one?

What would you recommend bang-for-bucks for this focus?

Thanks very much.

Hi!
How much difference in price are you talking about? For extra few pounds I would stick to the recommended one but I’m not an expert. I know one thing correct oil is very important . Hopefully people with more knowledge will reply if not try the search (or Ford Owners Club in google) . Good luck

As long as it meets or exceeds the specification above, go for it

On that engine it doesn't really matter.  No wetbelt, no turbo, no VCT, no GPF.  The oil is 'only' lubricating the bearings in the engine so any 5w30 should be fine.  Personally I would try to stick with one that meets Ford spec though.

I have been using Halfords 5W30 Number 1 in my Mk2 with the same engine for the last few years. This meets the spec. The engine takes around 4l of oil so a 5l bottle leaves 1l left over for topping up.

I buy it when they have it on offer. That is the cheapest suitable oil I have found.

We have two Mk2. One is 1.6 Zetec, the other 2.0 Duratec and both are running on 5W40. The 5W30 is a greasy water imo, it doesn't lubricate enough. Both engines were extremely noisy when using 5W30 and also burned oil.
