Thinking of buying a Focus ST Line. Is it a bad idea?

Featured Replies

Hi

Toying with the idea of getting a ST Line. Giving all the issues surrounding the eco boost engine especially the wet belt issues would it be a bad idea?

Been doing a lot of reading recently and my understanding is the belts need changing around 80k miles in and need doing correctly with correct oil.

I'd be buying a used model probably max £7k

So yeah. Good idea or foolish ?

Cheers

Yes.

Engines other than the 1.0 Ecoboost are available, of course.

ST Line is only a trim level.  (And not a particularly good one).

Are you looking at Mk3 or Mk4?

And as above, there are various engine choices, some without wet cambelts and some without any wetbelts at all.  So need to know the engine type as well.

Still mostly Mk 3/3.5 at that price level. I have seen the odd Mk 4 but with mega-mileage.

High mileage newer cars aren't necessarily bad though.  Means they'll have had the clutch & belts changed already, plus suspension etc.  I really wouldn't worry about mileage too much.

Provided that can be proved of course. We've had a few threads where buyers were, basically, lied to and even shown fake invoices.

I'd concur. If I were to sell my car, at 135,000 the new owner would get a car that starts on 1st twist of key and is largely reliable as long as you keep on top of the maintenance...

Twist a key? Next you'll be telling us that you have to wind the windows down with a handle. 😆 Does it have a lever to advance the ignition timing on the magneto?

Thanks for information.

I'm not really sure which engine to get I just want to avoid the wet belts completely if possible.

I'd say my budget is between is between 7 and 8 grand

In that case it'll pretty much have to be Mk3 facelift (MK3.5) with either the 1.5 EcoBoost petrol engine or the 1.5 TDCI diesel engine.  Both use a single dry cambelt with a recommended interval of 10 years.

I was in same Position myself and wanted the  petrol without the wet belt. At time.of buying I couldn't source the 1.5 ecoboost petrol so went with the 1.5 tdci diesel and I must say hafter getting used to it coming from a petrol it's a great driving car. Decent power and fuel combination ,I'm quite happy with this engine.

Thanks for the feedback. So would the MK3.5 be from 2015 onwards ?

Yes, 2015-2018 roughly.  Though there is some crossover at each end of that.

With this ignition circuit, you can hide one or more secret switches so you don't have to worry about the mouse car jacking.

And the manual window mechanism is significantly cheaper to replace than an electric window mechanism.

But it's true that once you've tasted comfort, it's hard to make concessions.
