8-year service: dealerships and details

Featured Replies

Car simpleton here, who goes from A to B and wants it to be trouble free. My Ford Focus 2017 Eco-boost 1.0 (only 29.5k miles) is due its annual service & MOT. I've previously used Ford dealerships for peace of mind and for ease whilst changing towns fairly frequently meant I never found that mystical "trusted local mechanic" forums suggest.

This year the dealership's "recommended" 8 year/100,000 mile service (incl. MOT & the £30 summer discount) is £300 but excl. brake fluid which is due (a rather ridiculous £85 extra, compared to KwikFits £50 for example). Spark plugs were changed in 2023.

Having dug through the online service schedule [https://www.ford.co.uk/support/service-intervals-check] though they all show the same checks until the 10 year interval which doesn't seem right as the dealerships quote very different prices for each service year..
Is there something I'm missing here from this online schedule to make the annual differences make sense? Another forum suggested the 8 year checks or replaces one of the belts, but that isn't included in the interval checks.

Given the plugs aren't due nor is the brake fluid included, and noting my low mileage, the price difference seems rather silly unless details are missing from the "menu".

Would a independent shop or a Kwikfit work through the same service checklist as the dealership?

Any advice or directions to better references appreciated.

What engine does your Focus have?

Apologies, have edited post to include that info; it's an Eco-boost 1.0

Ok. It is very important that the exact Ford specification of engine oil is used in that engine, not some random similar oil. This is because the engine uses a wet cam belt, lubricated by the engine oil. A Ford dealer is almost certain to use the correct oil, independents and Kwikfit type places are not so likely to realise the importance of this.

It is possible for independents to obtain the Ford service checklist and perform the same tasks as a Ford dealer but you would need to check with each of them exactly what they are going to do.

I have noticed that the service schedule from https://www.ford.co.uk/support/service-intervals-check is incomplete for some models. On my Puma that site does not mention changing spark plugs at any service, for example.

The belt replacement that you mention is due at 10 years but many people have it changed at 8 years. This is the cam belt which runs in the oil along with another small belt which drives the oil pump. If either of these belts break the results is a scrap engine. Ford dealers charge upwards of £1,200 to change these belts.

£1200 is more in line with what we've seen from independents.

A friend of mine had one done last year by his usual independent service garage (who happen to.be former Ford dealers) for around the £1000 mark.

Recent posts have been more in the order of £1800 and above (some well over £2000) at Ford dealers.

Indeed, £2600 has been reportedly charged by one Ford dealer.

I'd have to agree with Unofix there. You might just about scrape a very early Ecoboost for that money (2013/2014). At that age they should have had the belts done but you'd need to check very carefully for proof. Bear in mind the belt replacement is an £ 1800+ job at a main dealer (we've seen members on here quoted up to £2600!) and around £1000 or so at a decent independent.

A 1.25 might be a step down from a Mini Cooper but its a reliable engine with loads to choose from and fun to drive. £2500 should get you a very good example of a very late Mk 6 or a newer Mk 7. (2008 was the changeover to the Mk 7 which is more of a "contemporary" shape if that matters.)

As this is a Mk3 Focus, it will still be on yearly oil changes.  That means spark plugs & air filter every 3 years.

There is nothing more than oil & oil filter changed at the 8th year service on this model.
