Focus MK3 1.6 TDCI, Oil lamp in low rpm after oil change

Featured Replies

Hi Ford owners club members,

I need suggestion on some oil lamp issue I am facing.

Two days back did oil change (used  Castrol MAGNATEC 5W-30 A5 ) in service. Also changed OIL filter, Fuel Filter at the same time.

I observed the oil lamp stayed on when I started engine after the service, When I asked the garage person about this, the mechanic said they will clear the error code with some  diagnostic tool some other day this week.

In the mean time when I observed the pattern more thoroughly after coming back home,

I see oil lamps comes on at engine start and stays on approximately till 1200 RPM and goes off in higher RPM and this pattern is very consistent and same in parked and running condition.

From my understanding,  this issue is not about resetting the error flag in the ECU or a faulty sensor as the light comes on and goes off in very consistent pattern depending on RPM ( < or > ~1200 RPM).

When checked the oil level with dip stick, I see the oil is little overfilled around 1.5 CM over the max mark. This is also consistent with the fact that I supplied the garage  5 Litre of Engine oil and remaining amount was approx. 500ml, so approximately 4.5 Litre was poured in by the garage which is bit higher as per my opinion (as I saw the oil capacity in user book as 3.85 Litre)

Can you please give your idea/opinion what could be the correct solution for this problem ? Could this over filling be causing this issue ? Or any other thing I need to check or tell the garage before I visit  the garage again ?

Thanks for your help and support.

Kind regards,

MS

So, the oil & filter change was done by a garage? Take it back, and ask them to make sure the filter is fitted correctly. It is possible to get the filter in wrongly, so that the oil filter housing drain hole is not blocked off as it should be. This would cause your symptoms, as a lot of the oil is being pumped into the filter housing, but going back into the sump through the drain hole instead of being forced round the engine.

The filter comes out with the cap, but when fitting the new filter, it should be fitted into the housing with the protrusion on the bottom in the drain hole, then fit the cap. If not done correctly, the filter gets crushed up, and ruined.

I would suggest you should not drive the car like this, as you could ruin the engine.

This ebay listing shows the protrusion on the bottom of the filter (the filters are photographed upside down). https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/226512593285

Hi Alan and the community,

Thanks for saving me.. It was exactly what you mentioned.

I visited the garage again today morning, first they said it could be the oil pump which need to be replaced !! Then I mentioned about your opinion but they seem to be not convinced.

Then the drained the oil(The Castrol I supplied earlier  ) and refilled with their oil but the problem was still there. When I insisted to check the oil filter placement, they opened it up and we found out that the  filter had crushed inside 😔.

They then replaced it with a new filter one and that did the job !

Thanks again.. you saved from many expensive unwanted repairs and unnecessary replacements.

Have a nice day.

Kind regards,

MS

Glad you have got it sorted, and hope it hasn't stored up any problems for the future. Thank you for the feedback, it might help someone else in future.

If it was me, I would be finding another garage!
