Ford transit connect 1.8tdci wet belt ?

Featured Replies

Good morning

I have a 2012 transit connect that unfortunately stopped working yesterday, was driving it approx 20mph then sounded like a plastic cover had fell off underneath, I pulled over/rolled into a bus stop to find no cover etc...  engine won't start now, bottom turns but not the top... towed to garage he thinks the wet belt has gone.. I never knew it had 1.. gutted

Pretty much said scrap it, 114k £1500 to fix

What's the chances on valves bent etc if I was to buy the chain kit and do it myself? Can I check beforehand? There was no bangs, metal on metal noises when I pulled over etc

Thanks in advance

Yes, the 1.8 TDCI has a wetbelt from 2008 onwards.

There isn't really anything you check without stripping.  Just have to try a new belt and see if it works.  Personally I wouldn't take the risk.

If not aware, there is also a dry cambelt on top of the wetbelt, so you'd need to replace that one as well.

Thanks mate,

Yeah i took the Cambelt cover off yesterday thinking it was the cambelt gone, guessing if I took the plunge I'd be best changing waterpump too? What a crazy design this wetbelt is...

The waterpump can be changed without removing the cambelt on these, so not absolutely necessary, but if you're going to all that effort, might as well change it while you're there.  Make sure it's a decent pump though.  Fitting a cheap one may not last any longer than just leaving the original.

Thanks mate, think I'm just gonna scrap the van I'd imagine the valves are bent after careful consideration.

Don't suppose you'd recommend a van or fiesta/focus kind of thing that doesn't involve a waterbelt? Guessing they went to chains at something from 2014 onwards.

1.5 TDCI uses a dry belt.

1.5 EcoBlue uses a dry belt plus a chain.  (The chain fails on these).

2.0 TDCI uses a dry belt plus a chain.  (Generally reliable).

2.0 EcoBlue uses two wetbelts.

1.0 EcoBoost petrol uses two wetbelts up to 2018 on Focus and ~2020 on Fiesta.  After those dates the 1.0 EcoBoost was revised and fitted with a timing chain.  But still has a small wetbelt for the oil pump.

Honestly I'd recommend buying something without a a Ford badge.

Lol, reading this thread, owning a TC myself this is the first time I am learning of a 'wetbelt' but seems from the poster above I got lucky in this case because mine is 2007 and they were implemented in 2008 from their reply.
