Effect of heatwave and hot weather on engine oil

Featured Replies

Hello everybody,

I would like to alert users that heat waves and hot weather affect the effectiveness of engine and transmission oils.

With global warming, manufacturer recommendations are no longer valid : in summer, in Le Mans (France), temperatures are now between 20 and 40°C (104°F), which considerably reduces the effectiveness of the oils recommended by Ford.

With a 1.6 EcoBoost Flexifuel engine, the recommendation was initially 0w20, but then finally, in a technical note, it was necessary to switch to 5w30 due to dilution, and now I think it would be better to use a 0w40 grade.

Indeed, 5w30 oil can be used between -30 and +35°C (95°F), except that in reality, in a traffic jam in full sun, at idle, and under heavy load, the oil degrades extremely quickly, like transmission oil.

So, as an experiment, I'm going to use 0w40 and I'll give feedback. Same for manual gearbox oil (B6) I'm going to go from 75w to 75w80.

This is a discussion, so everyone is invited to give their opinion.

best regards

You may regret that.

Don't worry, 4 people bought the new Crapi this year, overall Earth temperatures and indeed Venus will be lower by 5-10 degrees
