Radiator grille damage

Featured Replies

Hit a pigeon today. Stupid thing flew down on the road in front of me and waited too long to fly off. There wasn't anything I could do to avoid it. I was travelling at around 50-60 and it hit hard enough to damage the the bumper grille. It's broken at the points arrowed and in the circle. I've had a go at glueing the breaks within the circle with Araldite, holding it together with a cable tie until it's cured, but I don't know how long that'll last so I have a question : is the black grille removable from the bumper? If so can it be removed without having to remove the complete bumper? If it can I might try to get a replacement from a breakers but if the bumper needs to be removed I won't bother as it would be too much hassle for me these days. Needless to say Haynes is completely useless for something like this.

Assuming it clips in similar to the grille on my ST it pulls out from the front. In theory.

But not sure how often the clips break when you try to do this - not had to take mine out for a very long time. There may be some tips that help, think I would have removed the front under tray to help try and release the bottom ones best I could

If you find an example grille on eBay you’ll get a better idea what the clips look like

I would expect Araldite to hold it for years. If you do decide to replace it, once you have got your new one you can break the old one out to remove it and clip the new one in from the front.

Defo' breaking out the old one is far easier than trying to remove it in one whole piece, that's what I did on my Fiesta.

The grill should just pull out.  I did a few upgrades to the gloss black honeycomb type back in the day, with gloss fog surrounds as well.  No longer stocked sadly.

Thanks everyone. I've taken the cable tie off and the Araldite feels quite solid so I'll probably leave it for now, although I didn't notice the tie hadn't pulled it into proper alignment. Not too noticeable though unless you know and anyway it is a 15-year-old car after all.

If I could be confident about getting it out without damage I'd have a better go at a repair, as it would be a lot easier on the workbench, but the plastic is bound to be very brittle at that age so best left alone.

Edit: I just did a search and found some on Ebay which gave me a clear idea of the type of clip and how many. It looks as though it would be quite difficult to disengage all of them unless I could get at them from behind. One of the Ebay ones on sale for £30 had at least one broken when I examined the photos closely. It's true there are enough to get away with one or possibly more broken but I won't risk it.

Nobody is going to notice unless you point it out to them. The repair you have done looks good. I've seen worse repairs on aircraft...
