Peeling paintwork

Featured Replies

On the drivers wheel arch, the paint work has started to peel/bubble, initially was a small patch but has since grown & gotten worse?

Any advice on what might be the cause for this? Also what would be the best way to rectify this?

Thanks !

Looks like the clear coat is flaking off. It might have started with a tiny amount of damage to the paintwork, it will continue to spread. The best way to rectify it is to have that panel resprayed, but if the car is 14 years old that is unlikely to be cost-effective.

I've just had a similar problem with the bonnet on our Mk2.5. Seems like years of UV have degraded the clearcoat. I decided to have the bonnet resprayed and some other cosmetic paintwork tidied up at the same time. Probably cost more than 1/3rd the current value of the car but as we're hoping to keep it going for a few more years I thought it was worth doing.

Same problem on my 2014 Ford Focus bonnet.

Due to the outer clear coat degrading, the coloured paint underneath was fine. Probably a manufacturing defect from the paint shop during manufacture? Test of car bodywork was fine.

I set up a search on eBay for a bonnet of the same colour (Midnight Sky) and age and two breakers came back within hours.

Cheaper than a respray and indistinguishable from the rest of the car bodywork.

Thanks, will look into that if can get away without getting it repsrayed.
