Intermittent sound from under car

Featured Replies

Hi. I’ve had my car (focus st line 2025) in  my dealership twice and they can’t find anything .
I hear an intermittent noise from the bottom right hand side particularly when on a bumpy road.
it can go days without it happening however .
Like a scraping noise almost. It’s not when I brake or change gears.
any ideas ?
i have a video but too big to post

This forum doesn't accept 'video' format, or sound. You'll need to post it to YouTube then post us the link...

Suspension problem?

Broken / cracked springs, or suspension links.

You'd have to be mighty unlucky to have this in a brand new car...

Sounds like the ESP braking a wheel that's slipping on cobbles.

My first check would be to make sure the tyre pressures are all exactly the same manually, instead of relying on the dash display.  Also check that all tyres are exactly the same.  Though I'm really hoping the dealership have checked both of those.

You can test this by flooring the throttle on a straight wet road (where safe to do so).  That should give you some wheel spin followed by the scraping noise.  If it's the same scraping noise then that at least confirms it is the ESP.

On today’s potholed roads?

It could be a small stone stuck between the brake disc and the rear plate, or a piece of plastic that is not properly attached and is rubbing.

That's what I thought initially.  But surely the garage would have seen scuff marks.  It doesn't take many miles to wear right through a loose arch liner in my experience.
