engine / car upgrades and pre fail fixes

Featured Replies

Hello,

I own a 2018 MK8 1.0 ecoboost fiesta, I've just been reading a few posts from back in 2018 when people were first panicking about the 1.0 EB engine failures.

As my cars a 2018 model i wondered if there was any lists of parts that need to be checked, looked at or replaced with face lift parts or parts that are no good.

I've read some things about coolant pipes perishing and cracking etc, coolant bottles braking as well.

My car seems to have been well maintained, it has full dealer stamps and i bought it from a local ford dealership (family run), was told they always serviced it, knew the owner, had all MOT and works carried out.

For peace of mind id like to see if theres anything i can be checking though.

Thanks as always for advice and info.

Facelift (Mk 8.5) has the revised engine with chain cam drive, except for the 100ps version.

Only precaution I'm aware of is regular servicing with the specified oil and no additives. The official Ford interval for the Mk 8 was 2 years/18k miles. I had mine changed annually, as many on here do.

There was an issue with rusting turbo coolant pipes which mainly affected earlier cars:

The expansion tank is a common issue on various Fords. In addition to age-related cracking, the cap often sticks and forcing removal can cause cracks.  Greasing the seals of the cap with silicone grease can prevent it sticking.

Both issues easily checked when doing normal underbonnet checks for oil, screenwash, etc.

1.0 EcoBoost engines were failing long before 2018.  I can remember some when I first joined in 2014.  The coolant hose that failed on Mk7s was updated before Mk8 production so yours won't have that anyway.

The coolant bottles have been poor quality for years.  Facelift won't be any better, they just aren't as old yet.

Main difference is the wetbelt engine, but the chain parts can't be swapped onto those.  The exhaust flexi will fail at some point as well.  Again, that can't be swapped with the later chain engine flexi.

Yes, certainly well before the Mk 8 appeared.

When I ordered my previous 1.0 Ecoboost, I was surprised that the service interval had been extended from the 12 months for the Mk 7.5 and enquired what changes had been made to the Mk 8 engine (or the oil specification) to facilitate this. Neither my dealer or Ford could come up with anything so I stuck with the 12 month interval, as many Mk 8 owners have.

ok thanks for the answers, so basically on my MK8 with it having all ford stamps any re-calls, parts changes should have bene done and there's no pre fail changes i can do. i've only had my car 1 year and already done an oil change, its due its major service at 45K which will be in about 6 months and ford will do that for me as id like to keep the dealer stamps going in case of future problems. I know the ecoboosts were failing before that (posts i read were dated 2018 is what i meant )and ive had my MK7's belt done in June, was only 30K but almost 10yrs old.

So only thing i can do is check coolant levels regular and oil change with magnatex oil and ford filters ( which i've already done once ) and proper service schedule by the sounds of it 🙂

If you're worried you could have the belt change early, say at 8/9 years, as many have.

As it sounds as if you have a full service record, you should be covered by Ford's goodwill scheme, which you may be aware of, though it's not a guarantee and we have yet to hear from anyone who has actually benefitted, afaik.

Ah yeah I have a copy of that letter. Not heard of anyone getting a goodwill using myself either. I did get 50% of the MK7 wetbelt change but that was for a different reason.

I'll sit and wait for now then, keep an eye on things see how it goes.
