Focus mk2.5 rear caliper change

Featured Replies

After upgrading my front brakes to nice shiny red Brembo 4-pots I’ve been meaning to sort the rear calipers for ages now to match. The original calipers would have needed some refurbing as the last time I changed rear pads the faces of the pistons were pretty corroded and it’d have been complicated having the car off the road for few days getting them sorted out and painted etc

Ended up getting set of these off ebay

Fully refurbished OEM calipers with carriers (which are very expensive from Ford) and obviously painted red, though shade may not exactly match the fronts.

Any tips on swapping them over? Got new discs and pads to go in at the same time and somewhere will have the ETIS instructions so got the torque settings etc. Plan to clamp the rear hoses to save fluid going everywhere and obviously bleed some clean fluid through the system once the new calipers are fitted. Have already checked the threads are clear on the caliper brackets.

For the hoses do they have sealing washers? As can’t see anything on parts diagrams etc

Thanks

If the hoses use banjo bolt type connections, they will need copper sealing washers on each side.

You can buy a pack of assorted sizes of copper washers quite cheaply.

The rear hoses are an inline fit to the caliper, my last ST I did upgrade to HEL lines. I think they kept the inline style fitting but probably a washer to help sealing.

Long time ago so can’t remember exactly, do recall they made zero difference to braking performance so not looking to replace the brake lines at same time I do the caliper job.

If possible, post a photo of the hoses you have.

It’s just got the original oem hoses like this

I meant the connections where the hose attaches to the caliper. Sorry if it wasn't clear.

If they look like they have a bolt going through them, they are banjo type fittings and will need copper sealing washers.

See attached image.

Ford has not used banjo bolts on brake calipers for Years. I have only seen these on custom brake conversions (big brake) but not on standard calipers.

The standard brake hoses directly connect to the brake calipers without any additional seals. They seal by the conical metal-to-metal seal principle which utilizes the contact between two conical surfaces to create a high-pressure seal.

As long as the seal surfaces of both the calipers and brake hoses are free of contamination, corrosion and damage they can be re-used without any problems. However I personally prefer to just replace the brake hoses since these are subjected to aging/deterioration and are quite inexpensive anyway.

Helps to know washers aren’t needed thanks 👍

Was under the back of the car this afternoon and the sleeving/protection on one of the hoses where it joins the metal pipe isn’t looking great so I may replace the lines anyhow.

Small-ish job replacing calipers getting bigger 🙄 the dust shields are looking tatty so planned on fitting a new set while I was at it but couple of fixings for the rear hubs are corroded pretty badly and could well need surgery to get them off 🙁
