Ford focus mk2 swap engine

Featured Replies

Hello ford lovers,

I have a ford focus mk2 2007 1.4 petrol, wanted to put a 1.6 petrol engine, is it a straight swap plug and play? I notice all the sensors are the same.

No.

Firstly you will need to change the gearbox and clutch to one from a 1.6

The PCM will possibly need to be swamped to the one from the donor vehicle, and then the fun will probably begin trying to match the software settings between the engine and the rest of the car.

Unless you're on the team of the guys on Car SOS, in which case it could be done in 48 minutes 🤣

Does that include a 10 minute tea break ? 🤣

Nope, just 12 minutes of adverts 😂

Is the wiring loom the same?

Wouldn't the "easiest" way be to swap the ECU, BCM and clocks from the donor car as one lot?

You would also need the immobiliser chip from the donor car key.

Yes the wiring are the same from both engines. Between the 1.4 and 1.6 everything is the same the only thing that change is got bigger piston and chambers.

Someone told me that it fits and drive without problem. But I wanted to be %100 sure.

and different gear ratios.

a Focus MK2/MK2.5 with 1.4 Duratec engine can easily be converted to the 1.6 Duratec engine. You only have to change the engine and transmission.

There is no need to replace the PCM. The PCM hardware of the 1.4 Duratec is 100% identical to the PCM hardware of the 1.6 Duratec. Both use the SIM28 PCM. You only have to program the correct PCM software for the 1.6 Duratec.

The SIM28 PCM software can easily be reprogrammed using a decent quality ELM327 interface and the ELMconfig software. The most recent calibration file for the 1.6 Duratec software is AM51-12A650-AB.

Both the ELMconfig software and many of the MK2/MK2.5 calibration files can still be downloaded from the website of the author: ELMConfig

Guys, is it worth putting a 1.6 petrol engine? I'm actually running on a 1.4 petrol. Is there any difference of power for a focus Hatchback? Because the 1.4 it's very slow.

And I'm %100 sure the 1.6 petrol it's going to fit straight away.

The 1.4 Duratec has a power output of 80 HP and a torque output of 124 Nm.
The 1.6 Duratec has a power output of 100 HP and a torque output of 150 Nm.

The difference is 20 HP and 26 Nm of torque. This is quite noticeable but do not expect miracles. The Focus MK2/MK2.5 is quite a heavy car. Even the 1.6 is barely sufficient to make the car perform adequately by today's standards. Ford made the engine a bit more responsive by using shorter gear ratios which results in relatively high engine speeds at motorway speeds.

In my opinion the 1.4 should not have been available in the 1st place. Even back in the days it was considered to be underpowered. Very few were sold for a good reason.

Compared to the 1.4 the 1.6 will be a significant improvement but it will still not become fast.

Regarding the gearbox ratios you may be lucky. Ford does not specify the gearbox ratios for the 1.4 in their technical documentation. Only the 1.6 is listed. The parts catalog however implies that the 1.4/1.6 IB5 transmission gear ratios may be identical.

You need to check this. If the gear ratios are not identical the engine will go into limp mode due to a mismatch between engine speed and vehicle speed.
