S-MAX /Mondeo Gen 2 Front Wheel Bearing & eBay Tool Warning!

Featured Replies

Just finished changing S-MAX Gen 2 front wheel bearing, you know, the ones that come with flange and bearing as a unit and cant be taken out or fitted without a special tool to avoid force on the rolling elements!

Bought 82 mm special tool kit (your kit may differ) off eBay which was badly designed causing a major problem (I can't believe ANY of this batch could actually do the job!).
No instructions (available online)
The black (removal) plates had to be ground to allow the bearing to fit through them.
The silver fitting plates would not fit round the bearing so had to grind a little off the rear of the studs.
Should have taken more off, as, once the bearing was pushed fully home, the plates could not be removed because the lips that force the outer race in, were catching on the hub - the plates were still too thick - disaster!
I had to grind a small amount off the hub to eventually allow them to be removed.

For the last two purchases I have been VERY disappointed.
An auto-darkening welding mask came with... a piece of standard dark glass! (eventually eBay refunded as seller said "can't you use it"  (well, I've got plenty of plain masks!) and offered a small discount.
For the bearing kit, the seller was very polite but obviously has no idea what they are selling and again offered a discount - if I'd known the trouble, I would have sent it back.

Just getting this off my chest, not asking for sympathy or criticism, just an alert for anyone trying this, and other jobs - check the tools carefully!

Sadly this is just typical of modern life. Everything is a giant scam and no one seems to care. 🙁

This is how ebay works now unfortunately.  Have to wade through 50 different sellers selling identical crap if you search by cheapest first, mostly from Temu with a massive markup.

To keep both buyer and seller using their rip-off site, they side with both, refunding both buyer and seller if the seller doesn't agree to refund.  I've had some very poor experiences on there over the last few years but get the same response each time which is basically 'you'll get a refund, so what?'...as if the time wasted, resource wasted and hassle caused are all irrelevant!  I've even had return labels sent that I can't use because the item would need to be taken to a hub 5+ miles away, just told that's my problem, not theirs.

There are some awful buyers on there as well, though I've been lucky enough to only get one or two of those.  One really annoyed me though, they paid for it, then waited until I'd packaged the item and paid for postage, to decide that they no longer wanted it and to cancel.  They couldn't understand that postage was ordered online, just saying I couldn't be been to a post office on a Sunday!  Anyway, I partially refunded them, keeping the money for the wasted postage, no idea whether ebay refunded that to them or not, hopefully they lost it so they'll think twice about paying for items they don't want in future.
