Replacing a cracked heated windscreen

Featured Replies

Just one thing after another with my 1.6LX now 😞

I've just noticed a crack of about 12cm along the top of my windscreen.

I've never had to have one replaced.

I think I've got windscreen cover on my insurance but does anyone know if a heated one is much more expensive than a normal one, and whether typical insurance covers a heated one?

Thanks very much and hope you can help.

If you have windscreen cover on your insurance, and almost all do these days, the cost shouldn't concern you. You may have to pay a £50 excess, but that'll be it...

I got mine replaced few years ago under insurance and didn't have to pay extra and mine was a heated one too.

Insurance should cover it, but check the small print from your insurer just in case.

My Mk2 had to have a windscreen replaced at 6 years old due to some idiot letting the wiper arm slip during a blade change and cracking the screen (🫢).  Heated, infra-red reflective, auto light & wiper sensor.

First brought out the wrong screen due to some fool putting the wrong sticker on it at the factory.  Second fitted the right screen but broke the sensor...  Third fitted a brand new genuine sensor.  All free of charge.

Though personally I'd rather have paid for the job to be done right first time.  Limiting stress and hassle is worth far more to me than the money.

If it's fitted with the heated system then I guess I'm going to have to take the fitter's word that it works, because I won't be able to test it until winter!

Hopefully it will come with a long enough guarantee.

Cars often get damp overnight at this time of year.  (When we're not in a heatwave anyway).  Just have to be up early enough to beat the sun to test it.

You'll at least know it's a heated one fitted, look up through it to the sky, if you see a very fine wavy heating element embedded in the screen, you got the right one. My goodness man, you really are a catastrophiser LOL

Spoken like a guy who actually has work done correctly...  That just doesn't happen over on the mainland!

I was thinking about that, and there must be some truth in it. I have lived in NI all my life, and this small home community the last 35 years. You just get to know 'who can do what' as reputations are closely guarded. If you screw up, word soon goes round. I'm guessing if you live in a much bigger community, it must be more difficult to find solid reliable workmen ?

You would usually get a 1 year warranty on replacement glass which would include a 1 year warranty on the hearing elements.

Pardon?

Possibly.  Though I spent my first 20 odd years in a small rural community.  People didn't have to do decent work down there, because the quality trades wouldn't waste an hour of their day driving all the way out, so the locals had a captive audience.

When the time comes make sure the screen is the same as the old one, we had our screen changed and it was a clear un-tinted screen, previous screen was tinted - Son was having his screen renewed on his Fiesta, his is heated, new screen which was to go in was standard with no heating element, Son questioned the fitter who stuttered a bit and replied back, this is the only screen they have, Son stopped him from fitting it, enquiring further the glass company was trying to pull a fast one, the same screen fitter went away and came back a few hours later with the heating element fitted.

Thanks for all the advice.

I'll be sure to make sure they fit a heated one 👍
