MK4 - “Park Brake Malfunction” please help

Featured Replies

Hi, as the title suggests, I currently have an issue with my parking brake and would really appreciate any help fixing this.

Everything I’ve observed so far:

I’m getting error message “Park brake malfunction service now” on the dash with the red brake light also flashing on the dash.

The parking brake does seem to still release and engage. Although, can hear both motors operating for longer than they usually would when engaging/disengaging brakes.

Read two fault codes against ABS module using Forscan:

C1034 - Park Brake

:78 - Alignment or Adjustment incorrect

C2005 - Right Actuator

:04 - System Internal Failures

Since clearing both codes, only C1034:78 has come back on.

Both disks and pads have plenty wear and brake fluid level is fine (don’t think this is really relevant to the fault).

Parking brake doesn’t seem to want to go in maintenance mode. When I try the “Park brake malfunction service now” message just pops on the dash.

Checked car battery with a DMM, was getting 12.17V (a little low?) with engine off and 14.28V with engine on.

I’m hoping to run a service procedure “Apply and Release calibration (Assembly Test)” in Forscan later on tonight and see what that does. But other than that, not sure where to go from here?

Any help is really appreciated! If you need anymore info please let me know.

Thanks

Houston you have a problem !! 🙁

Your battery is flat. Is it the original? if so then it needs replaced. Otherwise try and charge it for at least 12 hours.

Or a seized/ing caliper

Charge battery

Fully depress and hold brake pedal (engine running)

Release park brake

Press and hold release button for six seconds

Activate park brake

Pull and hold activate button for six seconds

Release footbrake

Clear DTCs and see if it comes back

If it does caliper is going down

The rear pads/discs aren't due replacement are they??

Thank you. That was also my main suspicion. So yesterday I took my car to a nearby garage for a free battery health check, before spending £150 on a new one. The battery passed very comfortably with no issues. State of charge was 12.46V (~80%) by the time they took their reading.

On the way to the garage, the parking brake mysteriously fixed itself. I’d done a good few miles and power cycles before this trip so not sure what fixed it.

I’m hoping my battery was just drained more than usual the day the fault first cropped up.

Thanks for the help.

Your battery will fail before December. A new good quality higher capacity Yuasa battery is about £115 from Tayna batteries.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll start shopping around in anticipation of that then.
What makes you say it’s likely to fail soon?
I assume a big decline in battery performance with winter weather?

You didn't confirm if this is the original factory fitted battery, but if it is then it well past it's 'use by' date. They don't usually make it past 4 years.

If the battery has been replaced previously then I guess it was replaced with the same capacity as the original which is only just capable of doing the job. Once an older battery has run down to 50% then they start to deteriorate quickly. As the weather gets colder the capacity will get less and eventually it will fail.

It is a wiring loom problem with calipers, check wiring and connectors
