Throttle body. To clean or not to clean confusion

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Can anybody confirm if I can clean the throttle body with the appropriate cleaner on a 2007 petrol 1.6. There is some contradicting information out there as to weather i can, or should in no circumstances

clean the throttle body because of a special coating applied by Ford. Can't seem to find a definitive answer??

Thank You, Lee.

I think the have special coating applied by Ford.so I would not

The special coating only applies to the plastic throttle body housings that were used on the Focus MK1/MK1.5.

The Focus MK2/MK2.5 has an aluminium throttle body with a brass throttle plate. These are not coated and can be cleaned without any problem.

Note that there is no need to use an expensive throttle body cleaner product. Any solvent like brake cleaner, carburetor cleaner or even petrol should do the job just fine.

In the past I even used liquid paint stripper to clean extremely contaminated throttle bodies.

On my old mk1 1 8 petrol focus l cleaned the throttle body, idle control valve with no problem, 1 thing to look out for is the T pipe breather which if l remember right is located at the front right. There common to collapse n will cause acceleration problems and eventually starting issues. The 1.8 and 2.0 goes at the back of them.
