Engine number query - ford focus - eco boost 1l 2013

Featured Replies

Ive just had my engine replaced with a second hand engine.

The garage did not write down the engine number, which I now need for my v5c. Can anyone show me with photos where this might be?

The garage is saying you have to remove the engine to find it, but I can't imagine this is true.

Also i have a photos of what might be the engine number and where i found it. Could anyone confirm if it is the number i need20250904_100430.thumb.jpg.ee78c042a4d3c697388dd7a17943d520.jpg?

Thanks

I wouldn't bother telling DVLA about a like for like engine change.

These use a cast iron block so you'll probably need to remove a bit of rust to read the engine number.  It's on a perfectly flat section at the gearbox end of the engine block.

If you do, you need some confirmation apparently. According to the Gov.uk site:

What evidence to give

You must give DVLA evidence or written confirmation if you make any of the following changes to your vehicle. Your V5C update will be rejected if you do not.

Change of engine number or cylinder capacity (cc)

You need to provide one of the following:

  • a receipt for the replacement engine that includes the engine number and cylinder capacity
  • written evidence from the manufacturer
  • an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
  • written confirmation on headed paper from a garage (if the change took place before you bought the vehicle)

The official new Ford replacement engines come without an engine serial number. The official remanufactured Ford replacement engines come with a stamped "XXREMXX" marking on top of the original serial number of the particular engine to render it unreadable.

In both cases the original serial number (last 5 digits of the VIN number) must be manually stamped into the new engine. To identify that the engine has been replaced an X suffix is stamped into the engine followed by a number that indicates how many times it has been replaced (X1 for the 1st time, X2 for the 2nd time, etc.).

In case of a used replacement engine, you can basically do 2 things:

1: Keep the serial number of the replacement engine and go through the hassle to have the "new"' serial number listed in the vehicle's paperwork.
2: Make the serial number of the replacement engine unreadable by stamping "XXXXXXX" markings on top of the serial number and stamp the original serial number of the vehicle into the replacement engine followed by the suffix system that Ford uses.

Personally, I prefer to use method 2. This way the engine serial number is still a match with the VIN number of the vehicle and the suffix clearly indicates that the engine has been replaced at some point. Since the engine serial number remains the same there is no need to change any of the vehicle's paperwork.
