which bulb do i need for my headlights?

Featured Replies

hi guys

i have looked at my headlights before i bought the h1 and h7 philips whitevision ultra.

i thought the h1 in the middle would be the high beam and the cloudy lens was the h7, thinking they are the same as my old car which was the mk2.

but once i put the h1 in, i switched the headlights on and put high beam on, the h1 didnt come on and noticed the dipped beam and high beam was from the same bulb?

the first picture is from the cloudy lens.

i have never seen a bulb set up like that.

i just wanted my dipped and high beam bit brighter as the factory ones arent really that bright.

many thanks guys

This is what you have in at the moment:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/XENARC-ORIGINAL-Headlight-66340HBI-Folding/dp/B007A0UW2E?th=1

Xenon HID lamps. I've no idea if they can be upgraded but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.

Edit to add: The halogen bulb next to it will be a cornering lamp which comes on when you are going around a corner at a fairly low speed.

Simple answer is no they can't legally be changed. Any attempt to replace them with something different will result in an MOT fail.

many thanks guys

i guess i will just have to live with it.

Is that an aftermarket Osram HID bulb or the OEM one? My OEM HIDs were Osram but can’t remember if they were labelled Xenarc. Quick look on Aliexpress seems to show same lamp as being OEM….

So you may be able to upgrade to an aftermarket replacement like Osram Xenarc Nightbreaker or the Phillips Xtremevision.

I’ve tried both but only got improvements after replacing the headlamp units as the reflectors deteriorate over time and better bulbs make no difference till that’s sorted. Don’t know if mk3 suffers from this the same as the mk2/2.5

With fresh headlamp units I found the Phillips Xtremevision had a whiter output which I preferred to the Osram Xenarc Nightbreakers, but this is only subjective

looking at my headlight unit, it looks new, the reflector isnt flakey so i should be good.

is this what you are referring to?

Something like that yes.

Can’t remember where I bought mine from it was a fair few years ago now

Do I just pull That square thing out?

Not quite that simple.

First disconnect the plug at bottom of photo, just pulls out.

Then turn the retaining collar anti-clockwise, it should click into an open position. Then gently pull bulb out. You’ll need to swap the retaining collar over onto the new bulb, set it in open position then fit bulb in and rotate it to closed. These can be tight to turn for removal and refitting. Then reconnect the plug.

I’m sure there’ll be some videos on YouTube with some more detail

just looked at my manual and am bit confused.

if you see the attachment on my bulb types for my headlight, it is showing H7 as dipped and H1 as my high beam, exactky the same as my mk2 focus then it shows the HID lamp d3s.

i am just throwing this out there but does that mean if i take the HID conversion out then i can use normal H1 and H7 bulbs in the cloudy lens?

sorry if this osunds silly but the manual has really confused me.

You’ve got factory fitted HIDS I’d expect, the handbook just covers all the different headlamp bulb options on the same page rather than being bespoke for your particular spec of car. Wouldn’t be practical to have different handbooks for every spec Focus.

The lamp fittings and probably reflectors too are specific to your HID bulbs, not designed to accept different types of bulb

thank you again 🙂

Agreed, they do look factory fitted to me, I think I can see a headlamp washer in one of the photos.

Titanium X came with dynamic adaptive bi-xenon headlights as standard on Mk3.5 Focus.

They are one of the main benefits of the Titanium X.  It is a shame to hear they have suffered over time as with some other models.

I must be going senile because for some reason they seem brighter now?
