Focus 1.5 eco blue or 1.0 eco boost

Featured Replies

Due to a left knee injury I’m selling current car and going the Auto route

I have narrowed down to a 2022 1.0 ecoboost petrol with 43 k on it

and a 2022 ecoblue diesel 1.5 with 53k on it

both one owner, both full history

I realise probably not much in it, I would go diesel but I will only do motorway runs about 6-8 times a month, rest of time is 2 mile trip to parents and back shopping etc

any advice on reliability, on what people would consider the better car?

the petrol is 1500 more

is the lack of long runs/milage likely to be an issue with this ford diesel engine?

my current Audi sufferes if I don’t run it down the motorway regularly

cheers

1.0 EcoBoost with automatic is showing more and more issues with the oil pump wetbelt.

1.5 auto isn't the most reliable gearbox either.

If you need auto, you're better off sticking with VAG cars.

There are a couple of threads running at the moment on problems with the 1.0 ecoboost/auto combination, eg: https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/163378-oil-pump-wet-belt/

I got an Audi few months ago, low mileage full history, two days later gearbox slipping

new stronic gearbox required, luckily I handed the car back due to having it under a month

Mk 4 Focus from late 2018, but that was the cambelt, still got the one for the oil pump drive.

So does the 1.5 diesel still have wet belt?

No, dry belt with a small chain linking the cams - unfortunately this has been known to break. Several threads on that.

That's a shame.  I still wouldn't have any more faith in a small engine Ford auto unfortunately.

While not perfect, it seems no modern engine is, I personally would go with the EcoBlue 1.5

The wet belt issue for the timing belt was resolved in later models with the revised Ecoboost 1.0 engine but problems with the retained wet oil pump belt seem to be on the increase. Also note that quite a number of VW engines are also subject to wet oil pump belt failure as do a number of other manufactures. At least with the Ecoblue 1.5 you can be sure to avoid all wet belts 👍

Switch to a Petrol Auto VAG or BMW (120i, 220i, X1 20i etc) or a Corolla or C-HR

I never suggest Fords with auto boxes, they're junk or quickly become junk

Out of interest did you know that the 2 litre Ecoblue has a wet belt when you bought it - I didn't and only read about it on here after the event?  At least I am ready for a big belt change bill in a couple of years if I keep the car - I will try to change the belt at 8 years as a precaution.

Kind of, at the time of buying my Focus 2.0 EcoBlue I was under the impression that all the EcoBoost and all the EcoBlue had wet timing belts so it was unavoidable. Perhaps if I'd known the 1.5 EcoBlue didn't I may have bought that.

In addition to the Focus I also own a 2022 Ranger 2.0 EcoBlue, so will also have to look forward to dealing with that when the time comes.

I intend to replace the belts on each of them when they are 8 years old.

Seems like we are on the same page there then, I'll start saving up for it now.
