Popping/tapping

Featured Replies

Hello I very recently purchased a focus 2012 titanium and so far I'm liking the way it drives and feels as I've usually had vauxhall upto now, but I am getting a odd popping/tapping noise which is inconsistent sometimes it happens when I'm not moving and parked but usually when I'm out of gear and rolling, it also happens a bit on the motorway doing 70 in 6th gear.

It's louder while sat inside the car than outside with the bonet open

I took it to the garage I got the car from and he said it is the waste gate from the eco boost system and it's supposed to sound like that, I'm not convinced that is true.

Anyone else experiencing this or can back the garages story?

Diesel, Petrol or Pixie Dust ?

  • EcoBlue V6 5.8 litre  ?
  • EcoBoom 3 cylinder 1.0 ?

Think a bit of info on your engine might help 🤔

From the red line on the tachometer in the video it's petrol, Ecoboost is mentioned so its a turbo, if Scott would like to tell us if it's a 4 cylinder 1.6 or a 3 cylinder 1.0 and what power rating, we'll have a start.

I do.like the Pixie Dust idea, though - is that part of Ed's drive for zero emissions?😀

Sorry should of said 1.0 eco boost petrol 3 cylinder

The 1.0 Ecoboost is not the quietest of engines, but very hard to comment from that recording. I had to turn the volume right up to hear anything, then heard a faint regular "rustling" which might be fairly normal, but also an intermittent "pop". I've never found one to be noisier inside the car, than outside with the bonnet open, when they are often compared to a bag of spanners!

You also haven't mentioned the service history of the car which is crucial with this engine - is it complete? The "wet" cambelt should have been changed 3 years ago at the very latest, do you have evidence that it was?

I think I can hear it on laptop this morning, (couldn't on phone yesterday). like a repeated pop, pop, pop.

The wastegates do get weak over time on these, but they tend to rattle, not pop.  This sounds more like a slight misfire, potentially a weak spark plug or coil pack.

The fact that you hear it more inside suggests it could be something inside the exhaust.  (Which would cover the wastegate in fairness).  Perhaps check the tailpipe next time it happens to see if you can hear it clearly there.  I would also check the exhaust flexi as most of those have split by now.

Thanks you guys. Yeah it's very faint on the video unfortunately it's louder when driving and it more difficult to record then😂

The wet belt was changed as I got the car  last week so it's brand new with a full service

They'd have to move the exhaust to get the sump off while doing that, so it could have been damaged in the process, particularly the flexible section as Tom mentions. A friend of mine had a belt done fairly recently and they had to replace the exhaust section.

The garage should sort this out to your satisfaction. Worth bearing in mind you have a right of rejection within 30 days, and 6 months to sort any problems present on purchase. After that it gets more difficult.

Sounds like the door hinge needs a bit of lubricant.

I don't have anything more to add since the previous video though.
