MK 3 ball joint unit replacment

Featured Replies

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone has required a 'ball joint dust cover' replacment?
Do they need to replace the ball joint unit as a whole?
Anything else they're likely to replace during this process?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

This is a recent addition to the MOT test.  So quite a few cars have started to need them replaced over the past few years.  In the past, people just left them until the BJ failed altogether.

It is possible to buy universal BJ covers, so no need to replace the ball joint.  However, if it's been split for a while, the ball joint might already be wearing anyway, and in that case it makes more sense to replace the whole thing.

In order to replace the dust cover alone, they only need to undo one nut, so nothing else should get damaged in the process.
