Ford transit custom - Low fuel level

Featured Replies

Hello,

At the start of the year, my Ford Transit was showing a low fuel level. The garage replaced the fuel sender unit and the battery, ran diagnostics on the speedometer/cluster unit, and eventually replaced the wiring from the level sensor to the cluster, which finally fixed the problem. The van ran fine for several months after that.

On Friday night, during very strong winds, the radio randomly switched on, the front headlights came on, and the dashboard lit up showing multiple warning codes, including:

  • Park Pilot malfunction

  • Engine coolant over temperature

These stayed on for 1–2 hours, and during that time the van wouldn’t start. The next day, it started with no problem, but a warning light indicated there was no fuel. I took the van for a drive, and the fuel gauge eventually moved up, but then reverted back to showing empty.

Has anyone experienced something similar or have ideas on what might be causing it?

TIA

Water ingress to the Body Control Module (BCM) is the most likely cause. It's a common problem on many models.

That's what I thought it would be.

Do you know how much it roughly cost to replace ? Also is there anywhere I can source one online I'm struggling to find one ?

Thank you

You will need the EXACT same part number, and it will need to be programmed with your vehicles "AsBuilt" files. It's not quick and not cheap, and may possibly end up as a Ford main dealer job due to the PATS security and the transponder keys.

Personally I'd first disconnect the battery and then fully remove the BCM. Check for signs of water ingress and/or greenish corrosion of the connector pins. See what you discover before going down the route of replacing the BCM.

Hi, do you know the exact piece of wiring room ford replaced to do with your fuel gauge? I have the exact same problem.
