Mk6 1.8Ztec swap

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have recently got myself a 1.8zetec engine to swap into my 2003 Mk6 1.25 I have seen an old thread which unfortunately never saw the finished product. However my situation is slightly different. I don’t need any thrills, as it will be a standard swap. Keeping as much from both cars as I possibly can.

Here’s a list of what I have for the 1.8 Zetec.
-ecu and engine loom

- interior loom

-clocks

-keys/ignition

(all from the same donor focus)

Things I think I need for the swap

-iron Ib5 as I think the the bolt pattern is different on the alloy housing off the 1.25 fiesta.

I understand that the engine mounts can be separated and used together with 2” spacer to allow the gearbox mount to sit correctly.

Just looking for some people or person to converse with and problem solve as this is a solo project build.

Here’s a pic of my fez cos why not

Hi,

The 1.8 is a strange option for a Mk6 Fiesta.  Why not the 2.0 that was used in the Fiesta ST?  Could just drop one of those straight in as the car was designed for it.

The 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3 Duratec HE engines are a straight fit as long as they are combined with the ST150 IB5 transmission. The 1.8 and 2.0 Duratec HE engines have the exact same external dimensions. The 2.3 is a bit higher because of the increased stroke.

The older 1.8 and 2.0 Zetec E engines however that were used on the Focus MK1/MK1.5 have never been used on the Fiesta MK6.

Installing the engine using both a mix and match of original Ford parts and custom-made parts is the easy bit. To get everything up and running from an electronical perspective will be a much bigger challenge. The Focus MK1/MK1.5 is SCP bus communication based. The Fiesta MK6 is CANbus communication based. Between these there is literally nothing compatible.

The 'boy's' from Car SOS could get it all done in an afternoon 🤣

I’m glad I’ve asked on here.
I spoke to an ecu company as I thinking I’d need some sort of stand alone ecu to get it to work. They were adamant that I had everything I needed. Maybe they didn’t want to take the job on.
I haven’t started the swap so saved myself a lot of nightmares. Shame as that zetec engine is mint and low mileage full history.

A standalone ECU that is compatible with the vehicle can be a solution but will also require a custom-made wiring harness and custom-written software. The costs involved can literally be thousands of Pounds. Definitely a lot more than the value of the car.

A 1.8 Zetec E engine does not have much value since it is not desirable at all. Everyone actually prefers the 2.0 Zetec E engine since it has better performance with virtually the same fuel consumption.
