Drive shaft knock

Featured Replies

Following the MOT I swapped out the driveshafts, one oil seal and tie rods on the wife's 1.6 diesel Fester.

On full lock there is a loud knock which you can feel through the pedals.

I've had a poke around underneath there is lateral play in the left side drive shaft which could possibly be the cause.

Obviously it does need to move a bit but this seems excessive to me and pretty sure that you shouldnt be able to move it by about 10-20mil.

Oil seal looks fine and it was replaced with the half shaft.

I have noticed that Autodoc does have some variation in driveshaft lengths eg: Ridex 616mm and Magnetti 621mm.

So am I looking at the right cause and will fitting a thicker transmission side oil seal cure it?

No.  The seal doesn't hold the driveshaft in place.  Lateral play against a rubber seal will just damage it in a matter of weeks.

If the wrong size driveshaft has been fitted then you'll need to replace that with the correct sized shaft.

It seems on further inspection its the cv joint that has failed so I'm sticking a new one in.
