Idle RPM hunting, Mk1 2003 Zetec SE 1.4

Featured Replies

Hi,

My MK1 has started having problems with RPM hunting at idle when warm, oscillating between ~630 to 770 twice a second. Sometimes it briefly slows the oscillations to once every 2 seconds with RPMs going between 550 - 850 and the engine shuddering like it is near stalling. I have attached a diagnostic RPM scan illustrating this. The car has around 90k miles.

Otherwise there are no error codes and no issues, the car drives very well.

Any ideas what could be the issue? What should I check/try? Any additional OBDII diagnostics I can run?

As far as I'm aware the problem started after a big maintenance job replacing the timing belt, water pump, steering pump, coolant -- but it is possible it was there all along, maybe in a milder form.

Thanks!
