What make of Mk2 1.6 Petrol lower torque mount to buy?

Featured Replies

As the title says. Mine apparently needs replacing. Prices on them are all similar.

The symptoms of it failing are a metallic popping or clunking sound. This happens either when pulling away from stationary or sometimes when driving over a bump in the road. You can slightly feel this pop through the driver's foot well. This mount is bolted close to this area.

With the poor quality of some aftermarket parts nowadays, which make is recommended to buy?

Thanks for any replies.

To answer my own question:

I bought a used one cheap from ebay as it looked almost new. My usual tyre place installed it with the car on their lift as it only takes a few minutes with the car raised. They only charged me £15 so it wasn't worth the bother of trying to do it myself with the car on the ground on stands.

The presumably factory original Ford marked one that came off was made from black painted pressed steel (see image). The rubber had cracked with age. The replacement was silver coloured cast alloy (see image).

From internet images, all of the aftermarket standard alloy ones look very similar. They are sold under different brand names at varying prices.

The chap who fitted it showed me that the steel type can be removed without having to unbolt the bracket from the gearbox casing. The aluminium type cannot as it is a bit larger, so the other bracket has to be unbolted to allow room to remove it.

This seems like it would be worth knowing in advance if anyone is planning to do it from under a car on jack stands.
