Total death!

Featured Replies

Hi all. I have a 2014 eco boost. I drove it last week and it was fine. Left it 5 days and now its dead. The first clue was the car wouldn't unlock remotely. Tried to start it and nothing. Not even a single light on the dash.

So I tried a jump start, and again absolutely nothing. No sign of any life.

Any suggestions as to what I should try next? Thank you

Probably just needs a new battery.

Jump starting won't always work with a knackered one.

Presumably you've checked the voltage of the battery and the tightness of the terminals** while attempting jump starting?

(** Daft one - I once had a brand new car that worked one day, completely dead the next. Transpired that the terminal clamps had never been tightened before delivery.)

Me to Roger brand new Fiesta with positive terminal loose.

Thanks for the replies. Just seemed odd the battery would go from fine to dead in 4 days of being parked.

I did think of getting a new battery of course, but I thought if I get one and its still dead then ill have wasted that money. I wondered if this was a common fault with the fiesta.

Anyway I'll get a battery and see what happens. Thanks.

Both my daughter's 2018 Fiesta and my Son-In-Law's 2020 Puma just died with no warning (well they said no warning)

I've found many times that electrical stuff (and not just cars) will work one day, not the next.

I've recently had an electric drill, a hover mower and a hedge trimmer suddenly give up the ghost. In all cases a quick strip down, clean up.of contacts, and/or removal of carbon brush dust from the commutator did the trick.

(Most embarrassing thing was my uncle's funeral many years ago. After the service I turned the key to head for the reception - nothing! So I'm grovelling under the car in suit and black tie, wiggled a few wires, and bingo! A thorough inspection back home later revealed a bit of corrosion on the starter motor connections - 10 minute fix).

Whenever any thing breaks my wife always says "Well it was working the last time I tried it". 🙄

I've always found that everything that breaks was working before it became broken.

A car battery will always start a car until the first time that it wont.

Same happens when people get ill.  "But I was fine yesterday".

Yeah Like when people hear of someone dying:

"Did you hear about John Smith?"

"no, What?"

"He's dead"

"God, I only saw him in the chippy last week"

So an update. I bought a new stop start battery from halfords and put it in.

It started and drove fine.

2 days later it was almost completely dead. I took it out, charged it and immediately drove to a garage to get it checked.

I expected alternator problems or something.

They called and said that the problem was I hadn't removed the 2 transport plugs from the new battery.

Apparently u have to remove two little caps that allow it to breath. I questioned whether this would discharge an entire battery in 2 days but they tell me it can.

Id never heard of this nor had any of my mates including a guy that has run his own garage for 30 years.

I was v sceptical and fully expected the battery to be flat again but to my total surprise its now working absolutely fine.

I guess this info might help someone else in future!

Thanks for the update.

I've no idea what effect leaving the transport plugs in has, I've always taken them out.

No one i spoke to even knew they existed! Add in the fact that halfords never mentioned it might have to remove them and there's no warning sticker on the battery.

Apparently when charging the battery can overheat and split or even burst which was worrying considering I was trying to charge it in the kitchen!

Yes, that was my understanding, that's why I take them out. On some vehicles I believe that you only take one out and their may be a small hose to connect where the plug came out but I've never seen that on a Ford.

The little vent pipe is not so common on any make since the introduction of the 'inverted' vent seal. If the vehicle is involved in an accident and the battery should end up 'upside down' the valve inside will close the vent to prevent electrolyte from leaking.
