Car tyres

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

I went to garage today to replace my tyres and ended up getting all 4.  The size of my car tyres is 205/50/17.

He put 2 part worns 205/50/17 on the front but the rear two he put 2 part worns 205/55/17.

I usually have 205/50/17 all round. With him doing this make any difference to car handling, Speedo, etc.

Thanks guys

No.

Years ago I had a Ford Granada, it had previously been owned by Pirelli Tyres. They had put wider tyres on the rear and recommended that as a method of improving the handling and fuel economy.

Maybe that still applies - be careful when you get the MOT done, if they stick to the book then they'll insist you put the same size tyres on all round (DAMHIK)

Only if the tester doesn't understand the MOT regulations.

Tyres only need to match across an axle.  Not front to rear.

The garage saying that 205/50/17 are hard to get and that's why he put 50 on front and 55 on rear.

I thought Adjusting the profile throws out your speedometer by few mph. The car default tyres are 205/50/17.

The speedo doesn't read from the rear tyres.

205/50/17 are easy to find new (92 choices shown here) but there aren't many cars that still use that size now, so won't be many part worn's available.

He said card 180 or cash 150 for 4 tyres.  That good or bad.

You can get 4 brand new budget tyres for £160 from places like BlackCircles or Asda.

for example:

Sunny NA305

205/50ZR17 SUNNY

Just depends what you want. If you're happy with the tyres you bought then that's all that matters.

Is that fully fitted?

I'd be expecting £60 each minimum down here.

So £150 for 4 does seem like a good deal.  As long as they have plenty of tread remaining.

Yeah fully fitted and balanced for 150 part worn.

Yeah, I guessed yours were fitted.  Wanted to know whether Unofix's were as well.

I couldn't even get 205/55/16s fully fitted down here for the price quoted.  (Ended up just leaving them for MOT in the end, not worth the cost, got an advisory on all 4 but still passed).

Just had a look at some local tyre places, it looks like they charge £15 per tyre for fitting and wheel balancing. So that would make it £55 per tyre fully fitted.

That's more like it.  So £220 for 4 new budget tyres.  Over 25% saved buying part worn.  Seems like a good deal.

I must admit you're lucky to get fitted, balanced and disposal for £15.  Back in 2018 I had a single tyre (new) and a single £10 note in my wallet.  Went around several tyre fitters trying to find one to fit it for that.  Eventually found one as a 'one-off' but they wouldn't dispose and our council tip doesn't take tyres so I ended up with the old tyre in storage for a few years.  Would only buy tyres including fitting nowadays!

Fortunately my local council waste disposal site will accept up to 4 tyres at a time. So no real issues in getting rid of the old tyres if the garage won't take them.
