Can anyone point me in the direction of a recommended company that i can get a recon gearbox for 2.2 custom?

Can't advise one but you are correct with some shady/con suppliers 😡

Our old Citroen Xsara whilst wheel spinning in the snow we heard a loud bang from the gearbox, after that it was terrible to put into 1st gear, we asked around and someone pointed us to one gearbox garage in Nott's and they said they are good at their job, so enquired with them, they told me it was a selector pin that had sheared, bloke saying be far easier to change the whole gearbox than to strip mine down, they told me to supply and fit a recon box was £600 all in, my missus said she'll pay to get it done, took the car in two days later and it was fixed, on driving I noticed it was very hard to engage reverse gear so went back, they took the car back in and said they'd readjusted it, it did engage a bit better but after 2 weeks it was back to him because I couldn't engage reverse at all.

They fitted another gearbox but this time all was well, I'd never go back there ever as I was told this so called specialist gearbox garage was actually a con artist, was told they'd go to scrap yards and look for low mileage tidy cars, then take the gearbox out and take it back, then they steam cleaned it, giving it a coat of bright silver, then clean up any rubber parts or linkages, making everything look nice a new, my gearbox was also painted in bright silver, I tell every one to stay clear. 

I can only suggest Google Maps and look for gearbox repair, then look at reviews for any working outwards from your location, then ring to discuss, then visit to check cleanliness factor (vital for gearboxes) and state of workshop plus actually meet them before committing to repair then references from previous customers.

All of that is in my Ideal World of course!

If your still looking and its of any good to you distance wise, a repair place l can recommend where l am l had a gearbox repaired by them at £150 if l remember it right.
