Ford Focus 2019 - central high mounted stoplamp not working

Featured Replies

I have a Ford Focus (year 2019) which I bought around a month ago. Yesterday I had an alert on the car (and also via the Ford app):

Lighting System Failure

What is happening?: A burned-out bulb or electrical system problem may exist with the exterior lamp system.

What should I do?: Check the exterior bulbs and connectors, replace as necessary.

I checked over the whole car and the only light that was not working was the central high mounted stop lamp.

First thing I thought of was to check the fuses. I cannot for the life of me figure out if there is a fuse as the manual doesn't list a fuse for brake lights etc. I've also googled it and cannot find any useful videos that would help either. Does anyone know if there would be a fuse or is it a case of replacing the whole unit?

The worst bit is we thoroughly checked over the car when buying it but can't say either of us noticed whether that light was working or not. What doesn't help is the car is the same colour as the light cover so it almost blends into the spoiler. I'm not even sure I realised it was there! However, the warning light did not come on before yesterday which makes me think it has previously worked.

I'm not a mechanic so please be kind when responding 😄

Thank you everyone!

Try undoing the high level brake light from the spoiler to see if the plug has fallen off the back of it.

Hello Sarah, Welcome to the UK Ford Owners Club.

There are no fuses for the Brake lights on the MK4 Focus. They are electronically controlled by the 'Body Control Module' (BCM) just think of it like a mini computer.

Your 2019 Focus has two independent brake light circuits, one that is for the left and right brake lights, and another for the centre brake light.

In order to understand the fault you really need to use the diagnostic software 'FORScan' which will give you the fault code. This could be a simple case of the brake light fitting having a fault or an issue with the BCM. There is even the possibility of the wire to the tailgate being damaged.
