Hi Phil, welcome.

There are (literally) hundreds of threads about this issue on here, such as:

https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/125476-mk4-start-stop-not-working/#comments

You don't say how long you've had the car/when the issue started which would be helpful.

Ford themselves give many reasons why S/S won't operate:

If you have opened the driver door.

If you have unfastened the driver seatbelt.

If your vehicle is at high altitude.

If you have switched the heated windshield on.

If you have selected certain drive modes, for example sport.

If the engine is warming up.

If the outside temperature is too low or too high.

If the battery charge is low or the battery temperature is outside the optimal operating range.

To maintain the interior climate or reduce fogging.

Very briefly, normal cause is low battery charge** so first step is to fully charge the battery for 12 hours.

If you only do short and/or irregular journeys, the issue is more likely.

At 5 years if the battery is still the original it may need replacement.

**Check against the chart below. NB if you don't already own a multimeter and a modern "smart" battery charger you will be needing one!

Most people prefer it not working to save wear and tear on the starter and engine.

Mine is from 2017. I went for a trip in July, driving 450km on the highway (~120km/h). Only when I came back a week later (that's 900km), then start/stop was working (and I stopped for shopping at 800km and it didn't kick in). That worked for 3 days. 🤔

First thing I usually do after starting my Focus is push the disable auto start/stop button! 🙂
