Mk6 2003 Fiesta Speedo Stopped Working

i have mk6 2003 fiesta finesse , and this morning my car started first time as usual and ran great, it was only as i was driving along i noticed the speedo was not working , one minute it was , the next it wasnt)

more inportantly what drew my attention... were the clock indicates your mileage there was 7 small dashed lines instead of the usual numbers. The car still drives perfectly smooth and is still as responsive as it was prior to this happening, a friens of mine as just told me there is no speedo cables now ? didnt know that,

anyone got any ideas why this has happened or how i can rectify it with minimum cost .

i dont think it has ABS its just a basic 1300cc finesse
