Fitting a new alternator

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Anyone help how to fit a new alternator and belt for a 2008 Ford focus style 1.6 petrol? I've been quoted by a garage about £315 for just the alternator. I've watched a few videos on YouTube and it looks fairly simple but I don't do mechanics so looking for a second opinion??

Is the £315 for just the parts, or parts, labour and VAT?

The standard labour rate for independent garages nowadays is around £80 per hour.

With the cost of the parts and 20% VAT, the total can soon add up.

An alternator is technically easy to fit.  It's only 4 bolts and a couple of wiring connections.

But access is the usual issue.  Little more space on the Focus than Fiesta which is good.  On this engine you'll have to remove the hydraulic PAS reservoir at minimum.  May also find it easier to remove the headlight as well.

The drivebelt is a stretch type, which you are meant to use a special tool to fit.  (Although I managed to fit a few without myself).

Honestly this isn't really the sort of job to start as a novice, but I can understand the attraction after that quote.

if i can chime in, i did mine a year ago. my previous car is the 2006 1.6 petrol.

on my car it was fairly easy, the only thing i needed help with was when i had to line the alternator up so i can put the long screw in, my car and the OP car is only 2 years different so im guessing the engine layout is very similar?
