2008 Fiesta 1.4 TDCi (erratic idle)

Featured Replies

Hi, I hope someone has some idea, because my local garage does not.

This year, it started to just randomly cut out, then no matter how much you tried, It would Not start or even fire. Had to wait for 1 hour for recovery to come, they just jumped in, it started and drove it onto back of lorry. Twice this has happened this summer, for some time, I've noticed once or twice, when accelerating, it feels like a petrol engine, with a plug missing a spark, not all the time, just random. Then this new thing later this year going dead, no attempt to fire no matter how much you turn it on starter. One local garage checked it on computer, it showed two faults, Crank position sensor & fuel pressure sensor. Well I've been driving, and servicing diesel engines for over 40 years, used to work on heavy plant and spent years driving such, So I tend to know a little about them and how they run. But never had or seen an issue like this on my cars in the past. Too old at 70 to be tackling this issues myself now.  Anyway I got the crank sensor changed, that appears to have sorted the "cutting out issue", but on startup, its erratic on idle and runs rough till it gets warmed up, not as it normally would be on startup, run it a bit and it seems fine. until you cold start it again. Thought well we'll try changing the fuel pressure sensor the computer mentioned, asked my local garage yesterday, took it up this morning. They rang me to say they could not get the part and could do nothing with it, not what I expected, but not a total surprise.

So where do we go from here now with this issue?  thanks for any advice or guidance with this problem guys Oh it's same model as 2007, before it changed in 2008, Mk5 I believe.

Rob

Rough running only when cold sounds like glowplugs.

Fuel pressure sensor is unlikely to be affected much by temperature.  The sensor is only available as part of the fuel rail from Ford.  There are plenty on ebay if you wanted to try a used one without the expense of genuine new.  Or you can buy an aftermarket sensor but the quality does vary with those which maybe why the garage don't want to go down that route.

PS - If you're in the UK this is known as a Mk6 Fiesta.  Anywhere else in the world, and often on parts sites, it's known as a Mk5.

Many thanks Tom. In 6 yrs with this car, this has never been a problem before. I'm in Yorkshire btw

I was saying to a retired mate & former hgv mechanic. If a driver of a machine said this, I'd probably say "If it runs ok leave it alone, let it develop lol  I guess I'll have to think about my own advice.
