Advice needed, strange clunk noise

Featured Replies

There is a singular clunk noise that comes from the engine bay of the car when I'm accelerating or decelerating and it occurs as I release the clutch and when there is a slight motion change of the car, it doesnt happen all the time and I only hear upto around 30mph or from gears 1 to 2 or 2 to 3 and vice versa.

I've checked the 3 engine mounts and all the suspension ball joints and bearings and the drive shafts for worn rubber but everything seems to be okay.

Has anyone had this issue or knows if it's related to the gearbox or not as I don't want to start delving into it unless I'm sure?

Thanks!

If you hadn't mentioned about checking the engine mounts, I'd have said it sounds like the dogbone mount ( gearbox to sub ) as it sounds like when the engine is twists back n forth with the most torque to get moving given its on acceleration and deceleration ? Sometimes it's not possible to that the bushes are giving way so removal and visual inspection is possibly better.

Check for a snapped front exhaust mount.

I would also say what you describe sounds like a failed gearbox torque mount. I had similar clunking sounds on mine recently.

Replacing the mount cured it. It isn't always possible to see if the rubber is cracked without removing the mount.

The pressed steel type mount is easier to change. That type can be removed and replaced without unbolting the bracket from the gearbox.

My front exhaust hanger bracket had also rusted off the pipe as they often do. I cleaned the bracket up and had it welded back on. This may be possible if yours has separated.
