Diagnostic Problems

Featured Replies

Good morning..

I left the lights on on my Ford Focus 2009 ..  Battery Dead..  when I tried to kick start with jump leads it wouldn’t  start..

got a new battery from Halfords fitted and my friend put his reader on it and the car didn’t pick it up.. took the battery connector

off to reboot as advised and it still comes up Transmission Malfunction..  Diagnostic check with machine cannot read my focus ..

can anyone help please…

Welcome!
Likely need more info and history (was it OK otherwise) especially exact model of car.
I'll say one other thing (as the "reader"may not pick up any Ford specific codes)...Forscan.
Plus whatever specialists on here say!

History of car is great for its age ..  was running perfectly until that morning with no warning lights or problems before hand..I think it’s a Ford Zitec 1.6..

thanks for quick response

Auto?

Check the main fuses on the positive wire, one of those may have given up.

Transmission malfunction on manual?🤔

You’re going to need a digital multimeter, and first check the battery voltage. If that’s good disconnect the battery and measure the HS can resistance on pins 6 and 14 at the diagnostic socket which will be approx 60 ohm, if not that is probably why the reader is not connecting to the car. Ideally you need to use Forscan to read any fault codes.

Focus 2009 model, I'd start with giving the top of the dashboard above the instrument cluster a good couple of thumps !!

...... and see if anything changes.

Did you watch him to see what diagnosis was done and are you as confident as you can be that this is correct?
In that case, it's a matter of finding someone to check that and do it if necessary?
If it worked before the flat battery, it's a bit of a coincidence that it suddenly also needs a starter??
Have you whacked the dashboard as the Mystery of Transmission Malfunction hasn't yet been resolved?

The AA offer a Roadside Assistance service.  Not a diagnostic service.

The starter motor might have failed.  But I would want to see evidence of that before paying for a new one.

As I said, make sure you check the main fuse between the battery and the starter motor first as that fails more especially after a jump start.
