Dead in the water

Featured Replies

2016 Ford Fiesta S 1.6 Liter 4 dr. Hatchback. Battery good, starter good, alt. good. Drives good. Drove car 2 mi. killed engine when I got home. Let motor cool to check coolant/antifreeze. Turned key on to start, NOTHING! No bell dinging, no lights came on. I pressed the brake pedal and dash lights came on, door open warning with dinging and started right up. Second time; it did the same thing with my grandson. He pulled on the steering wheel, up/down, side to side and dash lights came on and it started right up. Grandson thought maybe it wasn't all the way in park. I have no idea what caused it or really no idea what we did for sure to start it. I gave the car to my daughter to drive and she came down to pick up (50 mi. drive). I had her test drive and get a feel of the car and everything was fine. She drove it home, no problems. Now it's sitting in the Walmart parking lot dead in the water again and nothing I have told her to do is working. One thing I told her to do (which she is unable to do at this time) is to wiggle the battery cables. Please somebody help!!

Sounds like a loose connection on your battery causing intermittent faults, best bet is to try to tighten the battery clamp after taking them of and giving the battery posts a wire brush. If you tighten the clamps fully and they can still be moved by hand on the post, either they are not on properly and need to be slackened off, hit down and then tightened again, or you need a battery post shim as your post or clamp have been worn out.

Seen something possibly similar on a Korean car - even with the clamp tight, and seated as "low" as possible on the battery, not a good connection.  Last time I looked, you could buy a pair of tapered sleeves to effectively increase the diameter of the battery terminal and improve the connection.

Hey everyone, I felt the solution would be something simple and it was! Clean the battery posts and hookups. It now starts and run like a charm.

Nice! What did you use to clean them? Wondering If I should do anything special on my end. Just been using an old toothbrush for the last few years, hah
