UGH weird turbo coolant leak!

Featured Replies

I JUST finished up getting the whole engine back together after changing the silly BIO timing belt. Filled the oil, put in the freshly charged battery, poured in the coolant and....this elbow into the turbo is corroded and has a leak. What's the fix for this?

This was a huge job for me and I'm feeling pretty defeated. Someone give me great news about a simple fix.

Those pipes are prone to corrosion, as far as I know it isn't possible to replace the pipes without replacing the turbo. Sorry that isn't good news. I hope someone else will be along who knows better than me.

Yes, I confirm the pipes are part of the turbo. 🙁

BUMMER. Thanks for verifying anyway. Has anyone any experience with the eBay replacement cartridges? They're $90, but I'm sure they're not made by Continental.

The replacement cartridges are usually made in China. Especially the ones at that price level.

These turbochargers can usually be repaired:

- Cut off the hose connections.
- Have the remains of the hose connections machined out by a local machine shop.
- Tap suitable dimension threads into the turbocharger body.
- Install new hose connections with the correct threading. Preferably stainless steel or brass hose connections.

Because of the high temperatures the turbocharger can become it is recommended to use copper washers as a seal between the new hose connections and the turbocharger body.

This is great advice, and I might be able to fudge it in my home shop. I ordered one of the eBay cartridges and I'll run it in the meantime and see how it goes, but I'm definitely going to try to find something stainless and of similar ID to the original to screw into those holes. Maybe an actual stainless bolt, drilled out?
