Temperature Gauge for 2000 Fiesta Endura E.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I posted in July last year about trying to install a temperature gauge in a 2000 Fiesta with Endura E engine. I think for 99 onwards they switched to a digital dash on the fiesta. Previous to this it was all analogue including the speedometer, a way better job as even the basic model had a temp sensor. My car doesn't have a gauge for temperature on the instrument cluster. It has a light that displays the temperature symbol in red if the engine over heats. I hate driving such an old car with no temperature gauge and just relying on the PCM/ECU in the car which would probably light up when the damage is done.

I got myself a set of GHIA gauges which has a temperature gauge and a rev counter. When installed all work bar the temperature gauge. I got some hope earlier on in the year when I found this topic on a Ford Puma site of a guy who looks to be in a similar situation to myself and managed to take a temp gauge from the older analogue fiesta and install and wire it into a digital dash. this is the link to the site  https://www.projectpuma.com/threads/how-to-sort-your-temperature-gauge-with-non-standard-ecu.14395/

I bought an analogue instrument cluster, took out the temp gauge and wired it into a digital cluster I had (bought another digital cluster to try on first in case I damaged the cluster in my car and be really screwed if I damaged it). I also bought the genuine fiesta wiring diagrams for mid 99 to mid 2000 which aren't much help. This didn't work for me unfortunately. The gauge didn't move at all as car heated up. Drove it for 6 miles.  Getting really fed up now.

I have been searching through forums for information. There is a temperature gauge senser at the back of the engine on the driver side in one of the heater hoses. I read on a forum somewhere that this is the sensor that goes to the PCM/ECU in the car to monitor engine temperature. I also read that this is the only temperature sensor used on the later cars. last week I found out that there is another one near a hose that goes into the engine block. It is near the oil dipstick. It is difficult to see as is at the back of the coolant hose. I had to use an inspection mirror to see it.  On the earlier analogue gauged Endura E engine cars according to what I read there are two temp sensors, one goes to the PCM/ECU and the other is for the Temp gauge on the instrument cluster. I can't understand why my car with no temp gauge has two temp sensors. The wiring diagrams show one temperature sensor which goes to PCM and the PCM outputs a signal of some sort to the instrument cluster on pin 35 of PCM module. Is there anyone that knows what the second sensor is for and where it goes.

I am sorry for this long winded post but have been trying for nearly a year and a half and getting nowhere. It's an old car and shouldn't be this difficult. If any could help or any input, would appreciate.

Thanks.

You need to change the engine temperature sensor for a variable one from an earlier model, with a gauge, and your Ghia cluster will work

Yes. 👍

The OP has the basic temperature 'switch' fitted instead of the temperature 'sensor'

Thanks for your reply's guys. Which of the two sensors goes to the temperature gauge. The one behind the engine in a heater hose or the one at the back of the block near the dipstick.

The sensor I need would you know if they are still available to buy.

Thanks.

It think it is the sensor at the back of the engine in the heater hose but just want to double check. Thanks.

Just measure the resistance.

In case of a temperature sensor you will measure a resistance value that matches the coolant temperature between the pins.

In case of a temperature switch you will measure continuity between the pins. Depending on the actual coolant temperature the measurement will either be 0 Ohm or infinite (there is nothing in between).

I understand. It is so hard to get at that switch on the car I have. The switch is actually upside down so can't see it at all from the top. I think I will take it out altogether and put into boiling water and see if It read resistance or continuity. Thanks.

Below is a table of sensor resistance / voltages which might help. The values should be +or- 5%

That's Brilliant, Thanks for that unofix. I have printed that out.
