Tyres

Featured Replies

Please can anyone help. I bought a 65 plate Fiesta Titanium in the summer and I need to buy new tyres for the front. When I had a look today I saw that the front had 185’s and the rear has 195’s. When I put in my registration in all online tyre  guides says they should be 195’s so why are the front different? Should I just buy 195’s? I want to order online as cheaper than going direct to car tyre places.
many thanks

Either 185s were cheaper.  Or the previous owner needed tyres urgently and the local garage didn't have any 195's in stock.

It won't do any harm being different front to rear, but they didn't leave the factory like that.  I would just go with 195s again now.

The Plate on the inside of your Drivers Door Pillar will tell you what size and specification of Tyres your car should have.

With some cars there are a few different Tyre sizes that are acceptable to the car manufacturer.

I was trying to remember when a Fiesta had a 185 tyre as a standard fit - probably back in the XR2 era?

More recently 175, 195 or 205 have been the norm, depending on version.

I owned a 1982 XR2, it's been a while but from memory, I believe you're correct, 185...

Our memories are correct - there's a good shot of wheel and tyre part way through this article:

https://www.fastcar.co.uk/tuning-tech-guides/ford-fiesta-xr2-mk1-buyers-guide/

185/60 on 13" or 14" rim was a pretty common fitment in the 80s on "hot" hatches (very lukewarm by todays standards of course).

My first car with "big" tyres was my Mk 1 Cortina which I fitted with 5.5Jx13 Lotus Cortina steels with 165 tyres which seemed massive at the time!😀

It's important that you get the correct 195 tyre, so if you post up the full tyre size numbers, we can be sure of any advice.

The full tyre size is in the format 195/xx/xx, and I imagine the Titanium is on 16" wheels, but it's best if you tell us, as a previous owner may have swopped wheels.

Also Ford changed the 'factory'sizes over time, so depending on how good/poor your rears are, buying new fronts you could still choose a slightly different size (as the previous owner did) and get rears to match next time.

And, just in case you don't know, current advice is to fit the 'best' tyres on the rear of a front-wheel drive hatchback, so that will probably be the new tyres - all you do is swop the wheels round when you get the new pair fitted.

Personally, I rotate tyres throughout their life, then replace all 4 at the same time. For the UK, I'd personally go for all-season tyres over summer tyres. Currently have a Michelin Cross Climate fitted, an excellent tyre, I don't think I'd ever go back to summer tyres now, all-seasons are just so much better.

In 40+ years of motoring, I've never rotated tires in my life! I'm far too lazy...

Don't they rotate every time you drive the car anyway? :whistling1:

I rotate my tyres every 6 months or so . Even tread depths or there abouts and change all 4 when low. 36kmiles  out the first set of Michelin's. Now on goodyears at 52k with 4.5mm left.

Oh and I rebalance at half worn.

And those that don't know it's one of those heavy EVs that's wears tyres out quickly damaging the roads creating all the potholes. 😂😂😂😂
