Problem signing into EBay

Featured Replies

Just had a strange message when trying to sign into my account. Entered username/password (correctly!😀) several times and just got this:

Verify it's you

It looks like you signed in from a different computer. We’ll need to confirm your identity. Call us on 2086-100157 and mention security code (deleted by me)

We're available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The rather odd looking number was "not operating at present".

Anyone else had this? (It wasn't a "different computer" btw.)

Add a zero to become 020 86100157 is landline located in London, England and assigned to Colt Technology Services.

search results say it is an ebay scam number

Just signed in fine myself.

How did you access eBay?  Was it through a link from another site or email?  I can't see how a scammer could get their number into a genuine eBay sign in page?

I did have an odd email claiming to be from Experian this morning.  Didn't trust the link in it so I didn't click it.  I forget the exact wording now but it said something about completing a credit payment on my history file.  Don't know whether than one was a scam or not.

Oh Dear !!!!!!!!!!! 🙁

You need to change your eBay password as a matter of extreme urgency. It may already be too late. If you find that you can not log in to your eBay account from a genuine eBay link https://www.ebay.co.uk/ then it means the scammer have already changed your password.

Directly to the site as normal, as per Unofix's post.

Yes, if its associated with telephone, scams, how did they get the number on  there.

And of course, how do I change password if I can't get in? Bugger!

usually when i get this its because im either at home one time while signing in , then work the next.  or have my vpn left switched on.

Also your mobile network provider and home broadband alternate between server locations each time you connect, so the site (ebay in this instance) thinks you are signing in from a different location)

I have 2 factor authentication set up, so i get a code either sent by text, email or a phone call that i use to sign in.

assuming you have put your mobile number into ebay, you should have the option to verify by text.

failing that you may need to use the forgot password link, and reset your info.

Regards

After further thought, it did occur to me that I had used a tablet to sign in, and hadn't used that to access EBay for a while. I get a similar thing with one of my banks occasionally, but they send a code by text to my mobile.

This seems odd in that they are asking you to ring them, the number is partly missing, and is registered to another firm.

Colt Technology on the face of it looks legit, and it is in the telemarketing sales sector, but numbers can be cloned of course. How/why they could hack EBay and plant the number is another question.

If course it could just be that EBay are using them to provide a service.

I have managed to change my password and received an acknowledgement from EBay which is the usual "if it wasn't you, let us know".

I shall investigate further today but haven't tried logging in again yet, and won't until I get to the bottom of this.

I don't always trust the 'scam' claims on the whocalledme website.

Often the calls are just annoying rather than actual scams.  I've seen both my energy company and Ford dealership numbers listed as 'scams' just because people weren't expecting them to call.

Yes, I agree. I'm always very careful not to tick "scam" unless I'm absolutely sure, most I class as "unknown" .

Just to (hopefully) round off the tale. Tried signing in with new password, it accepted my username and password, said "welcome back Roger xxxx", but still got this:

So, added the zero, got a very pleasant sounding American guy who confirmed Colt is providing the service to Ebay, rang me back on my mobile number (which I did not disclose to him) to confirm my account is now unblocked. Just logged in successfully so it seems not a scam after all. (Just now got the usual sort of email from EBay advising that a new device had signed in and if it was me, to do nothing.)

Pointed out to the guy that the number is incomplete, and looks very suspicious, and has been reported as a scam on internet number checking sites. He said he would feed this back up the line.

It's also inaccessible to anyone who can't use phones...

PS - the "Who Called" site has a lot of comments from people who basically had the same experience as myself, but were stumped by the incomplete number and, like me, were suspicious. I have posted my own experience on there.
