Fusion 2 1.6 TDCI 5 sp manual shift linkage failure

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Juat had to get the Fusion recovered as the gear shift failed. The lever will move forward and back (3rd to 4th plane) but not change gear, there's no gate and it won't move side to side (i.e. from the 3rd / 4th to the 1st / 2nd or 5th / reverse planes). At the moment it's stuck in 4th. There was no warning and no stiffness, baulking or looseness when changing gear.

Just about to go and have a look, but at the moment I can't even see the gear shift at the gearbox end - I'm guessing it's buried under the battery, air intake etc. - and I'm not really finding anything helpful on the interwebs, so this is a bit of a pre-emptive post while I'm looking to see if anyone has any inspired ideas or suggestions as to anything to look at.

Thanks.

Hi, one of the knuckles on the gear change cables may have detached or will need replacing.

Both are easy to check, 1st is to remove the gear shift gater & look for the two knuckles, if both attached it's the gear box end.

Jack the passenger side up, look for the black plastic box on the gearbox, unclip the front panel it will give you access to the gear change cables & knuckles.

It's a good access point to check the gearbox level.

Thanks Martyn. Once I'd stopped flapping I took the console out for a look at the top end, and found the plastic box on the gearbox and took the cover off - I hadn't realised that was the shift mechanism cover.

Cables themselves and the shift lever mechanism at both ends are fine, but I'm guessing this cable end is supposed to be on the pin rather than posed artistically near it, and the bush has obviously had a bit of a traumatic experience:

I guess not having the cable located at the gearbox end is what's stopping it moving properly at the lever end. I assume the shape of the bush itself retains the cable on the pin as I don't see anything that a circlip, e-clip, r-clip or whatever would fit.

Next stop find one that's available quickly - of course this has happened when I have an urgent journey to do ...

Good luck with that.

Ford does not supply these bushings. They only supply the (way overpriced) complete shifter cable kit which consists of both shifter cables, connectors and bushings.

seperate connectors and bushings can often be found on AliExpress or Ebay. However, if you need it urgently this is probably not an option.

Thanks, that answers the 'do I wait until the dealer is open on Monday' question.

eBay doesn't look like a quick option and I don't do AliExpress. Amazon have them with Prime delivery next day, as part of a kit, but the fitment either isn't clear or doesn't list Fusion. Are all those pepper pot style bushes the same, Focus / Fiesta / Fusion / Mondeo / CMax?

The bushes are quite cheap, a pair on eBay are £6, or a pack of 5 on Amazon for £7, if you order in time you could get them tomorrow.

I'm not finding anything on fast delivery (next day or two days) other than the links I posted above.

Are all these pepper pot style bushes the same, i.e. if I buy Fiesta will they fit?

These are common parts, fusion/fiesta even Mazda share common parts.

The only thing different between the two is the body, you'll find parts etc shared with BMW & Mercedes.

Hi Martyn, thanks. I'm still not sure whether you're saying that these bushes specifically are all the same, or just talking generally?

Anyway, I couldn't find anything that was on less than 2 - 3 days plus delivery except the links above, and it seems to me looking around that it probably is right, so I've ordered one of the Amazon kits above, which should be here today (Sunday). FIngers crossed it's OK and reasonably decent.
