Hi does anyone know of a tool to remove the tappets on 2016 fiesta 1242cc without removed the camshafts.

There is no such tool, and even if there were, it would not be of any help. There simply isn’t enough space to remove the tappets with the camshafts in place.

As above, no shortcuts on this. You will need the timing locking kit (pin and plate) and remove the camshafts. Why do you need to remove the shims?

We have had since it was 6 months old and oil and filter changed every year

The cambelt is due for replacement this year anyway. Just replace any worn tappets at the same time.

To be honest, I would be more concerned about availability than price. Apart from Ford dealerships and Ford-specific engine builders, very few suppliers will stock the tappets. Since there are literally dozens of different sizes, it isn’t really practical to keep many in stock.

The required dimensions can only be determined after the actual valve lash is checked. Once the camshafts and tappets are removed, the exact thickness of each tappet must be measured. Based on the valve lash and the measured tappet thickness, the required new tappet thickness is then calculated.

If you’re lucky, most of the tappets can be reused in a different location, meaning you may only need a few new ones. So, the engine must be disassembled first before you can order the correct tappets.

If you happen to need common tappet thicknesses, larger Ford dealerships will likely have them in stock. If you need uncommon sizes, they’ll have to be ordered. Depending on the exact thickness and its rarity, this can take anywhere from one day to several weeks.
