usb stick and mp3 music

Featured Replies

I've just ripped a new album onto a USB stick using media player, but it's not showing up on the display on the car on laptop yeah. I've done a few albums no problem any ideas what could be wrong

Have you used this stick before or is it a new one?

If it's an old one then check the file type. Laptop might have defaulted to a type that doesn't work on Sync this time.

The stick should be fine then. I reckon it's just converted to the wrong file type this time.

I don't know what's happened there then.

Do you mean files that were appearing are not appearing anymore while you haven't removed the stick ? (And thus haven't changed anything on it ?) If that's the case, I really don't know.

Try to change the stick's name on your computer, so Sync re-indexes.

If it's a playlist that shows empty, it's different.

When i do explore USB in the car the file come up on the screen but when i just go into the artist folder it doesn't come up ?

It's probably the tags that were filled incorrectly (or not at all for the "Artist") during the mp3 creation. There are a lot of programs that help managing mp3 tags. If you're on Windows, "Mp3tag" is very popular, there is a "portable" version (means it doesn't install anything out of the folder of your choice).

When i was ripping the CD it had no details of the CD ? I ripped 2 Floyd CDs and still the same I named all the song titles still the same

Tags are "meta data" included in the mp3 file. They are independant of the name of the mp3 file. Maybe Your ripping program probably got the "artist" and "titles" from data on the CD or from an Internet database before you ripped your 1st CD but was unable to get that data for your last CD. Changing the mp3 file names after ripping won't fill the tags. You need a program for that, like I wrote in my previous post. Check if you can see the tags in Mp3tag. If not, use the tools to get tags from file names so you don't do it all manually.

OK, what statement (number) do you not understand;

1. Music files can have, next to the music itself, embedded data (within the file) that contain for instance the artist name, album name, track name, genre, year...

2. That data needs to be transferred or fetch from somewhere when you are ripping and creating a new mp3 file.

3. If your ripping program cannot find that data, neither on your CD or on an internet database that contains info about your (official) CD, the info cannot/will not be embedded in the mp3. It will have empty tags.

4. The Sync system in your car sees the files and lists the file names.

5. To display the files "by artist", your Sync system tries to read the "artist" tags from all files, and if the tags are empty, it will not list the (non-existant) artist nor that file under the (non-existant) artist. At that stage, the info is not taken from the file name which could have any structure.

6. You can still read or edit the mp3 tags on your computer with 3rd party programs, maybe even with the media player that you used to rip the CD.

I don't understand why it's not working, been doing it for years. I've read that Windows Media Player isn't supporting track names now, not sure if it's right or not. I can't make head or tails of mp3 tag
