REPLACING GEARBOX CABLES ON A MAKE 7 FIESTA 1.5 TDCI

Featured Replies

Hi, a have been looking on line for a you tube video for changing these cables out, one snapped!! and could only find an ST which showed a full dash out job. I have managed to do this without taking the dash out, I have a couple of photos to upload and explain the pit falls if anyone is interested.

We dropped the exhaust and intermediate support and pushed it over to one side, them undid the long heat shield and removed it. Undid the 2 10mm nuts on the gear cable holding down bracket and the cut these flush with a small wizzer. Undo the cable end on the gearbox, used large open ended spanner to prise them off, then cut the gear cables close to the firewall / floor. This just makes it easier to get out.

Inside undo the both side of the tunnel plastic plates, secret plastic screws and full off. Undo vertical steel support plates, 13mm spanner, one each side Remove the gear know cover. Remove the heater control facia and electric rear plug. This is just so you can see what your doing !!

On the drivers side, cut the floor deadening and pull toward the passenger footwell. You have to do this as there is zero clearance under the heater.

Underneath push up the gear cable plate at the rear of the plate and then pull lightly from inside, so it clears a floor mounted retainer, then pull the cables out from the drivers side.

On the new cables we put the nuts on the cable plate and cut the welded studs back 5mm, to increase the clearance under the heater. Its a two man job to get them in, push pull etc. Remove nuts. MEASURE length of new to old cables, especially the adjustable yellow one, the other is fixed length. Install cables from drivers side, push one cable longer than the other as it makes it easier to get through the hole under the heater.

Bolt up and jobs a good un !!

Grease up gear ball joints copper slip and push on at both ends. Replace plastic panels and facia etc....

Check gear selection, adjust if necessary
