Loud Ticking Noise Coming From Engine

Featured Replies

Hi!

I have a loud 'ticking' noise thats coming from the engine.

It seems to get louder when i put my foot down.

It past is MOT a couple weeks ago and has only started doing it now and then in the past week

but seems to happen more often now.

I've had a Google and people think it could be a dirty hydraulic valve lifter and if this is the case,

changing the oil may solve it. I've got a 1998 Ford fiesta 1.25 zetec so just wondering what oil would be best for it?

Thanks!

Nathan

Hi

How old is the oil at the moment.

Ford Formla E 5-30 Semi Synthetic is the correct oil

Others may include

Castrol Magnatec 5-30 for Ford engines.

Halfords Semi synthetic 5-30 again for ford engines

and Mobil 5-30 FE

Does the ticking get louder if the engine is cold or warm.

Jamie

Is it a constant ticking or now and then?

Thanks for the replies.

It is a constant ticking. But the last two days it's not done it again but I'm sure it'll be back :(

@jamie

When I've turned the engine on the ticking has started almost immidietley fairly quiet and then getting progressively louder over 10 mins or so.

I've only had the car about two weeks so I'm not sure how old the oil is but guessing draining and adding new oil couldn't hurt either way? Thanks for suggesting some!

My 1.25 MK4 sometimes has a knock. And it has clean oil, so I suspect a leaky injector or something.

As for a tick, doesn't sound too bad. I'd leave it. But if it turned into a knock, then I'd worry, as I am!

Well I didn't need to drain it lol as I checked the level before putting some in, there was next to none!

So she's well topped up now. The ticking came back again earlier today too but was very quiet and never got louder.

Maybe just need to run it in a bit now it has a bit of oil?

Well I pray the knock never comes for me lol but hope yours gets doesn't turn out to be anything big :/

Hello Nathan.

as it had next to nothing in it i still suggest that you change that oil.

How long was it left like this.

Well ive had it about two weeks so at least that long and god knows before that, rogue dealers lol.

Anyway, the ticking comes and goes still but it's fairly fairly quiet.

A neighbour had a quick look and reckons it could be the cam belt? but isn't 100%. Hope not, they're not cheap!
